Day 4

Day 4 – Saturday

Day 4 consisted of a lot of first aid, which turned out to be my favourite part of the course as a whole. We learnt about how to conduct CPR on an adult, a child and an infant too and how to use an AED. I loved this aspect of the course as it isn’t just something that you will only specifically use for Lifeguarding. They are skills that you can use while walking down the road if someone collapses. It’s a nice feeling to know that you could be of help in a situation like that!

For the pool section of the class on this day, we spent 2 hours refreshing our memories of the skills that we had learnt the week previous. It was also on that day that I accomplished my first surface dive (to say I was delighted is an understatement!)

Day 5

Day 5 – Sunday (D-Day!)

Day 5 was the last day of the course. We started the day off with tying up a few loose ends with the course and then the exam started at about 11:30. We started the exam with The CPR and First Aid section and then we went on to the question and answer section. We then headed over to the pool where we completed the water work aspect of the course.

I’m delighted to say that I did the surface dive at 2.8 meters. I honestly didn’t think that I’d be able to do it but with the support and encouragement of our tutor Aoife, I powered through it! (It’s amazing what a bit of adrenaline will do to your body!!)

Summary

To summarise, the course is definitely one of the best courses I’ve ever done. As I mentioned before I did the course as a personal goal and I’m absolutely delighted to have achieved it!

I did this RLSS Course with Atlantic Coast Guards and they have courses running frequently in Galway, Dublin, Mayo and Donegal. I really can’t recommend them enough. They’re very easy to deal with and our tutor Aoife really made the course enjoyable to be on!

If you are planning on doing the course and have any questions just let me know, I’ll be happy to answer any questions I can!
